Salt tectonics and collapse of Hebes Chasma, Valles Marineris, Mars
نویسنده
چکیده
A photogeologic and physical modeling study indicates that Hebes Chasma, Mars, formed by collapse of the megaregolith. Local heating facilitated drainage of ~105 km3 of brines and entrained particulates through fractures in the chasma fl oor and into a regional aquifer. A megaregolith rich in salts and water is implied by massive, low-gradient allochthonous fl ows that terminate in deep pits and troughs, by emergent diapirs, and by arching of Hebes Mensa. These structures are consistent with plastic and viscous deformation but inconsistent with collapse of basalt fl ows and/or tephra. Spectral measurements confi rm that hydrated sulfate salts are spatially associated with allochthonous fl ows from depth and light-toned deposits. Collapse features and fl ows are present in many other chasmata in Valles Marineris, suggesting that widespread salt tectonics and dissolution may have shaped the region.

Fluvial and lacustrine activity on layered deposits in Melas Chasma, Valles Marineris, Mars
[i] Valley networks on Mars are the most obvious features attesting that different geologic processes and possibly climatic conditions existed in the past. THEMIS images reveal valley networks within Melas Chasma, in Valles Marineris, a Hesperian-age canyon system. The valley networks in Melas Chasma are dense and highly organized, and the heads of the valleys are scattered at different elevati...
متن کاملLayering stratigraphy of eastern Coprates and northern Capri Chasmata, Mars
Distinct competent layers are observed in the slopes of eastern Coprates Chasma, part of the Valles Marineris system on Mars. Our observations indicate that the stratigraphy of Coprates Chasma consists of alternating thin strong layers and thicker sequences of relatively weak layers. The strong, competent layers maintain steeper slopes and play a major role in controlling the overall shape and ...
متن کاملSulfate and hematite stratigraphy in Capri Chasma, Valles Marineris
Introduction: Analysis of OMEGA and CRISM spectral data for sulfate-rich Interior Layered Deposits (ILDs) in Valles Marineris has revealed complex assemblages of iron oxides and multiple sulfates [1-7]. We have been developing stratigraphic assemblages to assess the similarities and differences among chasma [3, 5, 7]. Here we present sulfate and iron oxide stratigraphy within the central ILD of...
متن کاملDikes of distinct composition intruded into Noachian-aged crust exposed in the walls of Valles Marineris
[1] Valles Marineris represents the deepest natural incision in the Martian upper crust. Previous studies showed that the upper parts of the walls were made of finely layered probable basalts in most of the chasmata, while the base of the stratigraphy reveals primary Noachian crustal blocks. Exposures of pristine Noachian bedrock are rare on Mars, and mostly observed outside of their geological...
متن کاملMorphology and geometry of Valles Marineris landslides
The walls of the Valles Marineris canyons are affected by about 45 landslides. The study of these landslides provides a test of the hypothesis of processes having affected Martian wallslopes after their formation. The dynamics of Valles Marineris landslides are controversial : either the landslides are interpreted as large debris flows or as dry rock avalanches. Their morphology and their topog...
